Bluebird Houses

Bluebird houses are small structures designed to provide a nesting place for bluebirds, as well as other native nesting birds such as mountain bluebirds. Bluebirds prefer open areas with trees, shrubs, and grassy vegetation nearby, and prefer to have several bluebird houses available in their nesting territories. Bluebird societies typically recommend that houses be placed at least 150 feet apart and five to six feet off the ground, with a 1/2 inch gap between the house and the entrance hole. Bluebird houses can be used to attract eastern and western bluebirds, as well as north american bluebirds. However, they also attract other cavity nesting birds such as tree swallows, house sparrows, and European starlings, so it is important to monitor the houses regularly and remove any non-native species.   • Cleaning out the house at the end of each breeding season, to remove any old nests or debris that may have accumulated.

  • Protecting the house from predators, such as cats, rats, and squirrels, by installing a predator guard around the opening.

Overall, bluebird houses can be a wonderful addition to any garden, providing a habitat for these beautiful birds to thrive and raise their young.
