Purple Martin Houses and Accessories

As with most North American long range migrants, Purple Martins migrate to North America to nest. East of the Rockies they are totally dependent on human-supplied Purple Martin housing. In the Pacific Northwest, Purple Martins are beginning to use gourds and clusters of single-unit Purple Martin boxes for nesting. Purple Martins breeding west of the Rockies nest in abandoned woodpecker nest cavities.

A bird house for purple martins should be designed specifically for these birds, as they have specific habitat and nesting requirements. Some key features to consider when selecting a birdhouse for purple martins include:

  1. Size: Purple martins prefer larger birdhouses with spacious compartments, so aim for a house that is at least 8 inches by 8 inches in size per compartment.

  2. Ventilation: Purple martins need good airflow in their nests to keep them cool, so make sure the birdhouse has plenty of ventilation holes.

  3. Location: Purple martins prefer to nest in open areas where they can easily spot predators, so place the birdhouse in a location with an open view.

  4. Material: Use materials that are easy to clean and maintain, such as metal or plastic, to prevent the buildup of bacteria and parasites in the nest.

  5. Predator protection: Purple martins are vulnerable to predators such as snakes and cats, so make sure the birdhouse is sturdy and has a roof to protect the nest from these threats.

  6. Nesting materials: Purple martins prefer to nest in cavities, so provide materials such as straw or grass for them to build their nests.
