Squirrel Resistant Bird Feeders
When you feed birds you are welcoming all of nature into your backyard, some of which may be less welcome than others. Squirrels enjoy scoffing down all the same feeds that we put out for birds, whether its suet in a cage or thistle seeds hanging in a sock. Aside from getting a dog to patrol the feeding stations, the next best deterrent is a feeder that is designed to make life difficult for the squirrel while still making the food available for easy access by the birds. Squirrel proof feeders often have a mechanical component that reacts to the squirrels weight. These are the best. Cages around the food silos also work well provided the birds can reach the feed safely. Stationary barriers are effective but after a while the smarter of the bunch will figure it out.
